7 Secret Corners of Alsace
For this exploration of the secret corners of Alsace, I deliberately focused on Upper Alsace, a region rich in history and diversity, particularly between Mulhouse and the Swiss border.
During my years of residence in the Sundgau, I had the opportunity to discover lesser-known treasures that deeply impacted me.
As such, I have selected seven sites that particularly captivated my imagination and, in my opinion, deserve to be highlighted.
However, I want to emphasize that Alsace is brimming with many other fascinating places, and I strongly encourage you to share your discoveries in the comments below the article.
Without further ado, let’s embark on discovering these secret corners of Alsace with so much to offer.
1. Village of Lucelle
Nestled at the southern tip of Alsace, on the Swiss border, the village of Lucelle exudes serenity.
Surrounded by lush hills and vast forests of the Alsatian Jura, this first site of our 7 secrets corners of Alsace feels like stumbling upon a hidden corner “at the end of the world”!
While Luciele offers a haven of peace away from the urban hustle and bustle, it wasn’t always so in the Middle Ages.
Indeed, at the heart of the village stood the influential Lucelle Abbey, of which little remains today.
Don’t forget to take a stroll around the Lucelle pond and enjoy crossing the Swiss border on foot!
2. Morimont Castle
Perched atop the wooded hills of the Alsatian Jura, the Château du Morimont stands proudly, seemingly watching over the region for centuries.
Its imposing ruins beckon visitors on a journey through the past, when knights and lords ruled supreme.
From its ramparts, the panoramic view of the surrounding countryside is magnificent, offering a spectacle of timeless beauty.
The Morimont Castle is a true medieval gem, preserved in its verdant setting, just a stone’s throw from Lucelle and the Swiss border.
3. Landskron Castle
At the borderlands with Switzerland, the Château du Landskron stands as a solitary guardian of the past.
Its imposing ruins witness its tumultuous history, from epic battles to centuries of abandonment.
Despite its decrepitude, the Landskron Castle retains all its mysterious charm, attracting adventurers and explorers alike.
From its rocky promontory, the breathtaking view of the Rhine Valley offers a grand spectacle to those brave enough to venture to its ramparts.
4. Romanesque Church of Feldbach
Tucked away in the heart of Sundgau, the Romanesque church of Feldbach is a lesser-known architectural treasure.
Its elegant lines and detailed sculptures bear witness to the craftsmanship of the Middle Ages.
Inside, visitors can admire its ancient vaults, offering a fascinating glimpse into the spirituality of the time.
Surrounded by greenery, this Romanesque church provides a peaceful setting for contemplation, far from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.
5. Village of Hirtzbach
Located near Altkirch, the village of Hirtzbach emerges like a jewel in the heart of Sundgau.
Its flower-bedecked half-timbered houses lining the stream evoke a charming yesteryear, inviting visitors to stroll through its picturesque streets.
Around a corner, one discovers the imposing Saint-Maurice Church, housing a sumptuous interior, the Reinach Castle, and the beautiful public park.
With its peaceful atmosphere and authentic ambience, Hirtzbach offers an ideal getaway for history enthusiasts and those seeking tranquillity.
6. Valdieu Pass (Belfort Gap)
Situated between the Vosges and Jura mountain ranges and halfway between Belfort and Altkirch, the Col de Valdieu is much more than a mere thoroughfare.
Indeed, it’s not quite the mountain pass one might envision, with towering peaks and winding roads traversing mountain landscapes.
Instead, the Valdieu Pass distinguishes itself with its discretion, harmoniously integrated into the undulating landscape of Sundgau, where roads, railways, and canals converge in a unique convergence.
This is the exact site of the Trouée de Belfort, also known as the Porte d’Alsace or Porte de Bourgogne (depending on which side you’re on!).
This strategic pass sees the convergence of the former national road N19, the railway (including the Paris-Rhin-Rhône TGV), and the Rhine-Rhône canal.
Yet, despite its historical importance, the Col de Valdieu exudes a peaceful and serene atmosphere.
Bordered by lush hills and undulating fields, the pass almost fades into the landscape, concealing its secrets in the heart of Sundgau.
Travellers crossing this emblematic site can also marvel at the incredible procession of locks along the canal, adding an extra touch of charm to this escapade in the Alsace countryside.
7. Rebberg Hill in Mulhouse
Our last site of the 7 secret corners of Alsace brings us to the south of the city-centre of Mulhouse. The Colline du Rebberg is a true green lung for the city.
With its astonishing vineyard, belvedere tower offering a panoramic view of the city, and peaceful Alfred Wallach garden, it provides a moment of calm and greenery.
Visitors can wander along its shaded paths, discover its varied fauna and flora, and enjoy breathtaking views of the region.
Rebberg Hill is a genuine natural gem, offering an oasis of tranquillity in the city’s heart. It also houses the famous Mulhouse Zoological and Botanical Park.
